Open burn period ends Wednesday

The City of Maryville has entered an opening burning period. Maryville Public Safety Fire Division Chief, Phil Richabaugh says there are three different burning periods throughout the year.

"In the City of Maryville we actually have three different burn periods throughout the year.  One coming up in the fall started October 24th and will actually end November 6th.  That gives us a chance to burn any yard debris, leaves, small twigs, things like that."

Richabaugh says there are a few rules and regulations to follow when participating in open burning.

"There are a couple requirements for that and they are simple to follow.  Number one is that the only thing we can burn is yard waste.  It does not allow the burning of solid waste such as common trash, construction, bi-products, things like that.  The hours are from dawn to dusk, must be constantly attended, and with some sort of extinguishing source whether it be a garden hose, some buckets of water.  The other requirement we ask is that it be at least 50 feet from a structure and of course, burning on the city street itself is prohibited."

Rickabuagh also adds to be courteous of neighbors when participating in open burning and if smoke happens to be blowing in their direction try to choose another day to burn yard waste. The open burning period ends Wednesday.
